INVASION 2024

CLIENT: Team Regen

ROLES: Art Director, Concepting, Style Framing, Design, 2D Animation

A trailer for a commercial in-person video game tournament, taking place in Birmingham, England.

As Invasion’s concept was to bring Spain’s strongest players to the UK, I opted to make the trailer a combination of Team Regen's brand colours and the Spanish flag's colours.

I wanted this trailer to have a slightly luxurious feel to represent the event's greater scale and budget compared to previous instalments in the Invasion series of events. This idea inspired the use of a serif font for typography, deep reds and golden yellows as its primary palette and an emphasis on creating the video as one continuous piece of motion design rather than individual scenes cut together.

EARLY CONCEPT + SCRAPPED TRAILER

Originally, I had begun development on an alternate version of Invasion’s trailer that involved custom 3D animations of characters from Super Smash Bros Ultimate, the main game featured at the event. This version (featured below) was scrapped due to fears of legal trouble spawning from new tournament restrictions imposed by Nintendo during its production.

These restrictions seemingly prohibited the use of 3D models taken from their games in promotional material for commercial events so, to reduce financial risk, I chose to restart the project, utilising footage taken from within Super Smash Bros instead of custom 3D animation, which was permitted.

STYLE FRAMES

This trailer was my first implementation of using Blender in conjunction with video editing software; I sought to establish a stylish atmosphere unlike all other Team Regen event trailers to bring forward a public perception of an enhanced production value for the event.

Many motion design assets, from the gradients created to certain animations, were reused for the final version of the trailer that would go on to be published to at least partially salvage the stylistic design of this trailer.
