BIG EATS

A small collection of 3D animated shorts revolving around miniature figures recontextualising how we may view and interact with foods when at a different scale.

This video was a personal project from which I sought to improve & exercise my abilities in direction, 3D modelling, 3D animation and sound design.

I additionally learnt how to create and utilise photogrammetry of real life objects to help reproduce an authentic looking stop-motion style entirely within Blender. This allowed me to bypass physical stop-motion animation’s high costs and long production times without sacrificing much of its visual fidelity.

Originally, ‘Big Eats’ was intended to function as a mock marketing campaign (more info below) before I decided to pursue making it purely as a short, creative endeavour.

STYLE FRAMES

AS A MARKETING CAMPAIGN

Each of the shorts in ‘Big Eats’ were originally meant to function as bumper advertisements that’d stick in the minds of audiences due to their novel presentation. While the shorts still function similarly, I opted against designing them with the notions of marketing or advertising format in mind early into production and instead chose to focus on simply making each short their own tiny tale.

Below, I’ve included a few unpolished still mock-ups that may help display how I had originally intended to present ‘Big Eats’ as a marketing campaign.

EARLY CONCEPTS

As mentioned above, ‘Big Eats’ was originally intended to be a mock marketing campaign.

The concept of miniature figures interacting with large food began at the phrase ‘Big Deals is a Big Deal’. I wanted to emphasise to audiences that deals improve the quantity of food you can get, which could be presented with scale. Rather than simply growing the food, I believed it would be more striking for it to only be presented as large, alike photography of miniature railways.
